Introduction

In recent years, research in controlled nuclear fusion has experienced a remarkable global boost: not only due to advancements in universities, state laboratories, and international consortia but also because of the emergence of over forty private initiatives aiming to bring fusion from the laboratory to the market. This conference brings together key researchers and guests, including representatives from international research projects, the nuclear fusion industry, the electricity sector, mining, manufacturing, and other strategic areas. Representatives from the Government of Chile and the National Congress also participate.

While the main developments in nuclear fusion have taken place in countries with high technological capabilities, relevant initiatives have also emerged in regions with fewer resources, such as Latin America. Diverse research groups in the region, as well as scientific and technological initiatives, have made progress through strategies involving smaller experiments and device miniaturization, international cooperation, and interdisciplinary approaches, contributing uniquely to knowledge in plasma physics, materials science, and fusion-related technologies.

Lithium and Nuclear Fusion

Lithium is best known today as an ingredient of lithium-ion batteries, but it is crucial for nuclear fusion, primarily as a source of tritium and as a component in fusion reactor blankets. Tritium, a key fuel for fusion, is not readily available naturally and needs to be bred from lithium through neutron bombardment. Additionally, lithium's properties make it useful for cooling and shielding in fusion reactors.

A such, Latin America holds a critical resource for the fusion fuel cycle: substantial lithium reserves in Argentina, Bolivia and Chile, along with recent discoveries in Peru, placing the region in a strategic position on the future energy map. This conference is a strategic meeting point between researchers, authorities, and industry players. It articulates the academic, political, and business visions necessary to accelerate the development of nuclear fusion in Latin America.

Registration and Agenda

We invite you to join this multidisciplinary meeting, whether on site or via streaming, which will mark a milestone in aligning science, government and industry around Latin American nuclear fusion. The conference will include presentations by invited researchers outlining the current state of fusion research at their institutions and countries; as well as discussion panels with representatives from the Government of Chile, the National Congress, and the nuclear fusion, mining, manufacturing and power sectors to define concrete collaboration pathways.

  • Plasma-material interaction: materials under extreme conditions for first wall and reactor structures
  • Fusion fuel cycle and lithium chemistry
  • Numerical modeling and simulations of high-temperature plasmas and materials under extreme conditions
  • Pulsed power technology
  • Instrumentation and diagnostics for fusion plasmas

Applications, Industry and Policy

  • Fusion systems applications in energy, mining, manufacturing and transportation
  • Nuclear fusion as an industrial driver
  • Public-private partnerships in fusion projects
  • Energy justice and energy equity
